Ride the Rockies – Day Six

Royal Gorge Bridge – Salida to Canon City

Distance 66 miles

Time 4:05

Average 16.1 mph

Feet of Climb 2457 feet

Maximum Speed 42.9 mph

Since it was a short day I started riding at 7:50am. It was a lot warmer than yesterday and we also had a tailwind. We rode on Rte 50 for the first 45 miles which ran along the Arkansas River with a nice grade going downhill. I averaged 19.3 mph for that first 45 miles.

We then turned onto a rough paved road going to the Royal Gorge Bridge. The last 3 miles going up to the bridge had some very steep spots. About half the people were walking their bikes.

To see great sites you need to go thru difficulties and the Royal Gourge was awesome.

After the bridge we had some more uphill then a nice downhill to Skyline Drive. At Skyline Drive we had a short but difficult climb and then a one of a kind narrow road that went along the summit of a large hill.
